USA: Union Pacific Railroad opened a bridge over the Osage River at Jefferson City, Missouri, on November 25 as part of a capacity enhancement programme on the 455 km Kansas City – St Louis route.
The 365 m structure carries a double-track alignment and removes one of the most significant single-track pinch points on the corridor. Built at a cost of $28m, the bridge was inaugurated by UP, Federal Railroad Administrator Joseph Szabo and guests from Amtrak and the Missouri Department of Transportation. More than 60 freight trains use the route per day, while passengers on Amtrak’s Missouri River Runner service will also see accelerated journeys.
