AUSTRIA: Technology provider Nomad Digital has signed what it says is the world’s largest ‘multi-transport connectivity’ contract to date with Austrian Federal Railways, it announced on November 13.
Under the terms of the 10-year framework agreement, Nomad Digital is to equip ‘the majority’ of ÖBB’s passenger trains with onboard wi-fi and related services covering information and entertainment.
Under the initial phase, Nomad will design, integrate and deploy ‘multiple onboard connected passenger services’ including high speed broadband wi-fi on ÖBB’s 51 Siemens Railjet inter-city trainsets which are already in traffic, plus a further nine trainsets now being built for cross-border services to Germany, Switzerland, Hungary and the Czech Republic.
Subsequent phases would see Nomad wi-fi and related equipment fitted to around 900 trains, plus around 2 000 Postbus-branded buses operated by ÖBB.
Nomad Digital is to open an office in Wien to support the partnership with ÖBB, and to underpin its expansion in the German-speaking market.
‘We are confident Nomad Digital’s solutions will help to significantly enhance the passenger experience, delivering our customers an optimal digital experience and ensuring that our passengers get the most out of their journey’, said Christoph Schmutz, Chief Information Officer at ÖBB Personenverkehr.
Financial details of the framework contract were not disclosed.
