SERBIA: Russian Railways’ RZD International business has completed a three-year modernisation and double-tracking of the 15 km electrified Beograd – Pančevo line, which carries significant suburban traffic as well as international trains to Romania.

Krnjača, Ovča, Sebeš and Pančevo Glavna stations have been modernised, a signalling centre built at Pančevo Glavna and three electrical substations installed. There are two new footbridges, and a 242 m bridge has been built over the River Tamiš.

The project has added capacity on the route and increased the maximum speed from 30 km/h for freight and 50 km/h for passenger trains to 120 km/h.

The project cost US$90·9m, of which 15% came from the government and 85% was financed from a US$800m Russian loan.
