GERMANY: The first Type C2 trainset entered passenger service between Kieferngarten and Garching-Forschungszentrum on Line U6 of the München U-Bahn on June 17.
Transport operator MVG ordered 21 six-car sets from Siemens in 2010 for €185m. The first rolled out at Siemens’ factory in Wien in April 2013, but entry into service has been delayed by technical problems and a lengthy approval process with the Technical Authority of Oberbayern. Approval for two more trainsets is expected soon.
With space for 220 seated and 720 standing passengers, the C2 trainsets offer 3% more capacity than MVG’s C1 sets and 8% more than older U-Bahn rolling stock. They are equipped with CCTV and an infotainment system, as well as a ‘sophisticated LED lighting concept’ for more brightness. Door edge LED lighting changes colour to warn passengers of opening and closing doors. The trains are 115 m long and 2 900 mm wide, with an empty weight of 180 tonnes. Maximum service speed is 80 km/h.
