UZBEKISTAN: Construction of a multimodal terminal to handle Eurasian freight traffic near Toshkent has been formally launched by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and his Kazakh counterpart Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
The facility 10 km from the capital in the Yangiyo’l district is to be developed by Kazakh company PTC Holding which will operate the terminal, Halyk Bank which is providing US$70m in financing, the Toshkent regional government and Vuono Capital.
It is intended to increase freight traffic between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, and from the 1 520 mm gauge area, China, southeast and south Asia, South Korea, Afghanistan and the Gulf region.
The first phase in 2023-26 includes 24·8 ha of warehousing and 37 km of track, with a capacity of 1 240 wagons and 11 100 containers.
