INTERNATIONAL: A trial train carrying containers from the port city of Lianyungang in northeast China arrived at the Container Terminal Herne in the Ruhr region of Germany on June 21. The 11 300 km journey via Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus and Poland took 17 days.
The train was the result of co-operation between Lianyungang Port Group, Kazakhstan’s KTZ Express and Wanne-Herner Eisenbahn- und Hafengesellschaft, which operates a 32 km rail network with eight locomotives and is a shareholder in the container terminal. The partners intend to establish a regular service.
WHE Managing Director Christian Theis said that as well as serving the Ruhr area, the terminal would act as a hub for destinations such as Milano, Verona, Wien, Malmö and København.
