TAIWAN: The 9·2 km extension of the high speed line from Taipei Main station to the new northern terminus in the Nangang district of the city was opened on July 1. The 12th station on the high speed line, Nangang offers connections to metro and Taiwan Railway Administration conventional rail services.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Toshiba, and Mitsui & Co provided track and electrical and mechanical systems for the extension under a ¥20bn turnkey contract placed in 2013.
As part of the adjustments to the timetable associated with the opening of the extension, Taiwan High-Speed Rail Corp is to reduce the total number of weekly services from 969 to 943 and alter stopping patterns to reflect lower than expected off-peak ridership.
