JAPAN: Construction of the first of two maglev vehicle maintenance facilities for the Chuo Shinkansen began on October 14 at Nakatsugawa City in Gifu prefecture.
The event began with a traditional safety prayer ceremony attended by JR Central Executive Officer Kenichi Niimi and Mayor of Nakatsugawa City Setsuji Aoyama, together with representatives from contractors Kajima Corp, JR Tokai Construction Co and Tobishima Corp.
The contract for the Chuo Shinkansen Chubu General Vehicle Base was signed on March 18 2020 and construction is due to be completed by the end of September 2025. The 50 ha site is located on a spur to the east of the Tokyo – Nagoya maglev alignment about 65 km from Nagoya.
Apart from inspection and maintenance work, the Nakatsugawa facility will include a workshop for the assembly of new vehicles as well as complete overhauls.
The second depot and maintenance site will be located at Sagamihara City in Kanagawa Prefecture, about 45 km from central Tokyo.
