SPAIN: RENFE has awarded Talgo a €281∙5m framework contract for the supply of 26 gauge-convertible dual-system 3 kV DC and 25 kV 50 Hz high speed train power cars.
These are expected to share a basic design with the vehicles used in Talgo’s newly developed Avril high speed trainsets, the first of which are now undergoing commissioning trials in northern Spain.
The contract, which includes an option for 14 more, will enable RENFE to introduce a further fleet of high speed trains, which it is designating S107. The power cars will be used to top-and-tail coaches which Talgo is currently rebuilding from Trenhotel overnight cars deemed surplus to requirements by RENFE.
Together, these would create a fleet of 20 S107 high speed trainsets for operation at up to 330 km/h. The contract also covers the maintenance of 13 formations, with an option for six more if the option is taken up.
This is the third major contract to be let in the last two years under RENFE’s ongoing €3∙5bn fleet modernisation programme, following on from recent contracts for 37 narrow-gauge trainsets (won by CAF) and 211 suburban EMUs (awarded to Alstom and Stadler).
The next major procurement is expected to cover 72 regional and medium-distance multiple-units, which could be worth up to €1∙3bn. However, in April RENFE’s Administrative Council recommended a call for tenders be deferred pending further assessment of traction technology, which could allow this fleet to be supplied without any diesel powerpacks; RENFE had initially indicated to the market that the trains would be need an electro-diesel traction package.
