DENMARK: The rail link to Aalborg Lufthavn will open with the timetable change on December 13, infrastructure manager Banedanmark has confirmed.
Aalborg has Denmark’s third largest airport, which is used by business, charter and leisure travellers serving a large part of northern Jylland.
It has been connected to the national rail network by a 3 km branch which diverges from the Aalborg – Hjørring – Frederikshavn line at Lindholm, just north of the city centre.
Construction of the rail link was authorised in 2018 and began in February 2019 at a cost of DKr276m. The single-track branch initially parallels the existing line before curving westwards through a former allotment area and bridging the Lindholm Å river. It then passes under Thistedvej to reach a new station adjacent to the main terminal. This has a single 180 m long platform that can accommodate trains of up to 204 m.
The airport branch will initially be served by an hourly train in each direction, with DSB extending its InterCityLyn service from København Lufthavn which currently terminates at Aalborg H. The journey from Aalborg H will be just 10 min, with intermediate stops at Vestby and Lindholm. DSB says its intention is to operate a more frequent service in the longer term.
