POLAND: The European Investment Bank announced a €120m loan to fund modernisation of 58 km of double-track between Wroclaw and the boundary of Dolnoslaskie voivodship on November 9.

This is the first phase of a planned upgrade of the 164 km Wroclaw - Poznan section of European rail corridor E59 between Malmö, Szczecin and Ostrava.

The upgrade is being co-financed by the EU's Operational Programme for Infrastructure & Environment, with completion scheduled for 2015.

It is intended to raise speeds to 160 km/h, encourage modal shift from road and reduce maintenance costs. The project also includes the provision of noise barriers, wildlife crossing points and better drainage.
