SPAIN: As part of the programme to electrify the Infiesto – Cabezón de Sal section of its Oviedo – Santander route, FEVE announced on October 6 that work had been completed on the 21·2 km between Infiesto and Arriondas at a cost of €7·1m. The 17·4 km Arriondas – Ribadesella section is in progress and expected to cost €6·9m.
Work in Asturias is being co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, and forms part of an electrification programme covering a total of 204 km. FEVE is looking to progressively eliminate diesel traction by extending OHLE from the end points of suburban electrification schemes, which on the Santander – Bilbao route will involve electrification from Orego to Aranguen.
