ISRAEL: A US$195m contract to design, build and maintain track and electrical, ventilation and fire safety systems for the tunnels and bridges on the A1 fast line to Jerusalem has been awarded to the Electra Boegl joint venture of Electra, Electra Infrastructures Hasharon Excavators, Signon Schweiz and Max Bögl Bauunternehmen.

The scope includes Israel Railways’ first use of slab track.

‘The A1 project is moving ahead rapidly, and we're now entering the last phase of building the infrastructure, tracks, electricity and signalling’, said ISR General Manager Boaz Zafrir when the contract was announced on February 5. ‘Tunnels are completed, bridges almost completed, and HaUma station in Jerusalem is in almost the final stages of construction.’ ISR expects construction to be completed in 2017, for commercial operations to begin at the end of the first quarter of 2018.

  • ISR carried 48·5 million passengers in 2014, up 7·5% on the previous year. Freight traffic was up 12% to 7·5 million tonnes.
