SERBIA: Infrastruktura Železnice Srbije has begun dismantling 435 km of track on lines which were abandoned between 1978 and 2014.
The move is expected to generate €2·7m through the sale of scrap metal.
Novi Sad based company ZGOP is undertaking the work.
The lines are:
- Bečej – Senta (35·8 km);
- Senta – Kanjiža (17·1 km);
- Sečanj – Jaša Tomić (10·4 km);
- Sombor – Bački Breg (25·3 km);
- Sombor – Riđica (28·1 km);
- Vladimirovac – Kovin (40·9 km);
- Bečej – Vrbas (36·9 km);
- Zrenjanin fabrika – Vršac (81·2 km);
- Horgoš – Kanjiža (13·5 km);
- Karavukovo – Bač (13·4 km);
- Petrovaradin – Beočin (14·4 km);
- Žabalj – Čurug – Bečej (31 km);
- Kikinda – Banatsko Aranđelovo (32·9 km);
- Sombor – Apatin fabrika (21·6 km);
- Sopot Požarevački – Kostolac (32 km).
The removal of tracks will free up about 590 ha of land in 26 municipalities, with some of the routes to be converted into cycle paths.
