ITALY: RFI has called tenders for reconstruction of the railway between Palermo and Trapani via Segesta Tempio in Sicily.

The Alcamo Diramazione – Trapani section of the line has been closed since February 2013, when it was severed by a landslide. Since then, Trapani, one of the larger population centres on the west of the island, has only been accessible by rail from Palermo via Castelvetrano and Marsala, a much longer route, meaning trains struggle to compete with other transport modes.

RFI intends to let a contract covering the necessary reconstruction of the damaged section as well as the modernisation of stations at Segesta Tempio and Calatafimi, where platforms are to be rebuilt to the national standard of 550 mm.

The work is expected to cost €102∙3m and will be funded from the National Recovery & Resilience Plan. Completion is envisaged within 1 069 days of the start of activity on site.
