ALBANIA: Progress Rail subsidiary ECM has signed a turnkey contract to supply the signalling systems for the Tiranë – Durrës modernisation programme, which is being undertaken by Italian company INC under a contract signed with national railway HSH in February.
Progress Rail is to supply the entire ETCS Level 1 signalling system, including a MHR9 computer-based interlocking and trackside equipment, for the 34·2 km main line between Tiranë Public Transport Terminal and Durrës, as well as the 5·7 km branch which will be built to serve Nënë Tereza international airport.
‘This work is of strategic importance given the numerous investments foreseen in the Balkan region, particularly in Albania’, said ECM Managing Director Paolo Covoni when the contract was announced in late May. ‘Once preliminary documentation is finalised, our team will proceed with the design phase, factory testing, installation, testing and commissioning onsite in Pistoia and Genova, followed by training courses on signaling systems for Albanian railway technicians.’
