SWEDEN: Infrastructure manager Trafikverket has completed the latest stage in the ongoing programme to modernise the 2 km corridor through central Stockholm. Known as the ‘wasp’s waist’, this is the busiest section of the national rail network.
The latest works saw the 250 m bridge over the Norrström replaced during an eight-week closure from June 22 to August 17. This follows the replacement of the 200 m Söderström bridge during a similar blockade last year.
The next stage will see work on the bridge bearings, and construction of a new pedestrian and cycle bridge across the Norrström.
The SKr3·2bn programme to modernise the route to ensure its operation for the next 80 years is scheduled to be completed by late 2021.
