SWITZERLAND: The release of a fifth tranche of funding under the ZEB railway infrastructure development programme paves the way for Swiss Federal Railways to start work on six enhancement projects worth a total of SFr170m.
The biggest of these is the long-standing scheme to separate traffic flows at Wylerfeld east of Bern. This will be achieved by construction of a single track diveunder from the north side of the Bern station approaches to the south side of the alignment. This will pass below the three tracks of the Bern – Olten main line to emerge at Wankdorf Süd, eliminating conflicting movements between Bern – Olten trains and services between Bern and Thun. The total cost of the project is SFr270m, of which SFr125m is funded from the ZEB. Completion is envisaged in 2021.
The other projects covered by the latest ZEB funding allocation include a northern subway at Winterthur station and smaller schemes in the cantons of Jura, Neuchâtel and Schwyz.
