INNOTRANS: Recognising the challenges for vehicle manufacturers and railway operators in meeting the emissions reduction objectives set out in the Paris climate change agreement, engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce will be promoting a range of future-oriented technologies at InnoTrans 2022 under the theme of ‘Powering the path to net zero’.
These include an advanced hydrogen fuelled engine based on the successful MTU Series 4000 diesel engine for the locomotive market, and hydrogen fuel cells, as well as battery power packs for use in hybrid and battery-electric vehicles.
The company estimates that its MTU Hybrid PowerPacks combining battery storage with a cleaner and highly efficient diesel engine can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 25%. This can be further enhanced by the use of sustainable fuels.
Rolls-Royce will also be promoting its overhaul, remanufacturing and life-cycle services support through long-term service contracts aimed at cutting costs and minimising the use of resources.
