BRAZIL: The state of Amazonas has awarded a R$1·46bn contract to build a 20 km straddle monorail in the city of Manaus to a consortium of Scomi, CR Almeida, Mendes Junior and Serveng-Civilsan.

The line from Largo da Matriz to Jorge Teixeira will have nine stations and a capacity of 35 000 passengers/h in each direction. Completion is scheduled within 40 months.

Announcing the contract award on August 5, Scomi said its R$342m share of the contract includes the supply of 10 six-car SUTRA trainsets and depot equipment as well as beam design, system integration and project management services.

Scomi is also part of the Monotrilho Integração consortium which signed the contract for the Line 17 monorail in São Paulo on July 30. '2011 has been a great year for Scomi as we reach yet another milestone with this second monorail project in Brazil', said CEO Shah Hakim Zain. The latest contract 'will further strengthen' Scomi's position in bidding for four further projects to be tendered in the next 12 months. 'Our partners in Brazil are the two largest infrastructure companies in South America and we intend to harness this alliance to further our market presence'.
