Tung Chung Line extension

CHINA: The government has given final approval for construction of a 1·3 km western extension of the Tung Chung Line plus the addition of an extra station on the existing route.

Under plans confirmed by operator MTR Corp on January 10, the line is to be extended from Tung Chung to Tung Chung West, while Tung Chung East station would be built between Sunny Bay and Tung Chung to serve an area of newly reclaimed land. The construction of this station will require the realignment of 1·2 km of the line.

Civil works are expected to commence this year with completion scheduled for 2029.

‘With a mission to provide quality railway service, MTR Corp staunchly supports the building of communities around rail stations in line with the government’s strategy of making railways the backbone of public transport’, said MTR Corp CEO Jacob Kam.

‘The extension will cater for the new town development in the Tung Chung East new reclamation area and Tung Chung West, enhancing the connectivity of Lantau North and support the long term, sustainable growth in population and employment opportunities in the area.’
