CANADA: Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced provincial funding for four transport projects in Toronto on April 10. The province is to provide C$11·2bn of the total cost of C$28·5bn.
The city’s fourth heavy metro line, the Ontario Line, would connect Exhibition GO Transit station with Ontario Science Centre on the future Eglinton Crosstown light rail line. Interchanges will be provided with Line 1 at Osgoode and Queen, and with the east-west Line 2 at Pape. Due to open in 2027, the Ontario Line would cost C$10·9bn to build.
Line 1 is to be extended north from Finch to Richmond Hill. The C$5·6bn Yonge North Subway Extension is expected to open ‘soon after’ the Ontario Line, which would relieve capacity constraints on the existing route.
The Bloor-Danforth Line 2 is due to be extended east by three stations to McCowan. The C$5·5bn Scarborough Subway Extension is expected to open by 2030.
The Eglinton Crosstown light rail line is to be extended to Pearson Airport, which is currently only served by heavy rail services. The western extension would be built partly underground and is expected to cost C$4·7bn. Opening is expected before 2031.
