Anglia Railways is taking delivery of eight Class 170/2 Turbostar DMUs from Adtranz, which were to be introduced on the 185 km London - Norwich route from mid-July. With the start of the winter timetable on September 26, Anglia also hopes to deploy the trains on services from London to Bury St Edmunds, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft, giving these routes direct services to and from the capital for the first time in many years.
Each three-car Class 170/2 has a total of 153 seats, 124 of which are standard class, including three folding and seven tip-up seats and two wheelchair spaces. In both classes seating is a mixture of airline-style unidirectional and facing pairs over tables. The 29 first class seats are located in one end car, which also contains the two wheelchair spaces and a disabled toilet - Anglia’s new trains are the first to be fully compliant with the Rail Vehicle Accessibility Regulations.
The centre car contains an office for the senior conductor and a buffet counter. The air-conditioned Class 170/2 features LED dot-matrix passenger information displays, as well as an electronic seat reservation system with LCD displays mounted in the luggage rack above each seat. A public telephone is also fitted.
Each car is powered by an underfloor MTU engine developing 315 kW at 1900rev/min, driving a Voith hydrodynamic transmission and a ZF final drive. Maximum speed is 160 km/h, and fuel capacity is sufficient for 3000 km of operation. Anglia has acquired the trains through Porterbrook Leasing under a ’no train, no pay’ train service provision agreement. Adtranz is maintaining the trains under a 10-year contract with Porterbrook, and has a dedicated team of eight staff at Anglia’s Crown Point depot in Norwich.
