RESTORATION of the railway to Kotipalli in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh began with the laying of a foundation stone on May 11. The route from Kakinada through the Godavari delta is primarily expected to handle agricultural traffic to and from the port at Kakinada which is being expanded.
The current railway budget makes financial provision for the reinstatement of the line and its extension across the delta to Narsapur and possibly Machilipatnam. Although South Central Railway describes the project as a restoration, the original line built in the 1920s was removed in 1940 and the project is closer to being a new railway.
