THIS MONTH, India’s Northeast Frontier Railway is due to complete a feasibility study for a fourth rail bridge across the Brahmaputra, linking Bogibeel and Dibrugarh. According to General Manager, Construction, G P Madan, NFR has spent over Rs7bn on infrastructure works in the last three years and has works in progress valued at Rs3·25bn.

NFR is pushing ahead with gauge conversion and expects to open shortly a 124 km line between Goalpara and Guwahati along the south bank of the river. Gauge conversion is getting under way on the 100 km metre-gauge line running south from Lumding to Silchar in Assam. Conversion has also been approved for the branches from Silchar to Jiribam in Manipur province and Bhairabi in Mizoram.
