IARNR?D ?IREANN is making a major effort to expand its freight business in 2007, after several significant flows were lost in 2006.The company is to expand its business with logistics firm Norfolk Line, increasing the frequency of its Ballina - Waterford trainload container service to three trains a week. I? believes the best opportunities for freight growth centre on linking container terminals with ports, rather than in bulk commodities or wagonload traffic. The Irish government has made it clear that it has no proposals to encourage freight from road to rail, and any increase in services must come without significant investment in rolling stock. A number of diesel locos will become available as passenger services are switched to multiple-unit operation.
