THE MINISTRY of Development has called tenders for a preliminary study into creating a ’high performance’ route between the north coast of Spain and the Mediterranean Sea.
The proposed route would connect with the high speed line between Barcelona and the French border as well as the proposed central rail crossing of the Pyrenees. Also serving Teruel, the route would be for use by both freight and passenger trains.
It forms part of the 2005-20 PEIT infrastructure plan (RG 2.05 p61). As well as examining economic, functional, environmental and operating issues, the study will consider how far the new corridor can be created through existing schemes.
