INDIA’S Northern Railway has announced plans for the renovation of New Delhi station. Money for the scheme has been allocated under the railway’s passenger amenities fund, and the work is to be completed over the next 12 months.
A three-story building 22m wide will be built on the Ajmeri Gate side of the station. This area is now used by around two-thirds of the station’s daily passengers, but is on the opposite side of the site to the existing passenger facilities. The planned 2800m2 structure will house air-conditioned waiting rooms, an extensive food plaza, travel offices and 10 low-price dormitories for passengers waiting for early morning departures.
There will also be access to Line 2 of the Delhi metro, which is currently under construction.
