USA: Siemens announced its largest-ever US light rail vehicle contract on February 5, a $184m deal to supply 55 SD160 high-floor cars to Denver's Regional Transportation District.
RTD has previously ordered a total of 95 LRVs from Siemens. The initial seven vehicles from an option for 34 SD160 cars are have now entered service, and the remainder are currently under construction.
The 55 cars in the most recent order will have more space for bicycles, prams and wheelchairs than the existing vehicles. They are to be built at Sacramento, and delivered in 2009-12 for use on the 19·4 km West Corridor line from Union Station to Jefferson County Government Center which is scheduled to open in 2013 (RG 4.06 p195).
