MADRID regional government has awarded contracts worth a total of €181·3m for the construction of four new rolling stock depots and the expansion of an existing facility on Line 4 in the Hortaleza district.

The depots are needed to service the 698 new metro cars and 70 light rail vehicles that will be put into service by 2007 as the metro network grows by 90 km. New depots are to be built on Line 1 in Vallecas and Hortaleza, and on Line 3 in Villaverde Alto. The Metro Oeste light rail routes from Colonia Jardín to Boadilla del Monte and Pozuelo de Alarcón will have their own maintenance facility.

By 2007 seven new depots will have been added to the 12 currently operated by Madrid Metro, including a facility on Line 6 at Arganzuela and a light rail depot at Sanchinarro. Existing depots at Laguna and Cuatro Vientos are also to be expanded.

  • Under an agreement signed on May 18, Madrid regional government and the municpality of Getafe are to share the €150m cost of a further extension of Line 3 from Villaverde Alto to El Casar, to interchange with Metrosur and Line C3 of the Renfe suburban network. Work on the 2·8 km route is expected to take 30 months.
