ON SHOW at the Hannover trade fair this year was a skate designed for dealing quickly with a damaged wheelset. Termed Dolly, the skate is intended to allow a vehicle with a defective wheelset to be moved rapidly to a workshop or depot for repair.
A hydraulic jack is used to lift the axlebox so that a gap of 30mm is opened up between wheel and rail. This suffices to insert a metal block, allowing two staff to assemble the skate kit round the wheelset. The skate can be adjusted to suit different wheel diameters and can handle axleloads of 27 tonnes; maximum speed is 40 km/h. Around 30min is needed for jacking the vehicle and assembling the skate.
