COMPLETING its preparations for the forthcoming Expo 2000 world fair, Hannover transport operator üstra inaugurated the final section of its light rail Line D on February 19. The 9·5 km line, served by route 11, provides a second light rail link to the city’s trade fair grounds. It also serves new residential districts which are being developed in the southwest of the city.
The opening of the route to Expo-Ost coincided with inauguration of Expo Plaza and the German pavilion site, although the Expo does not start until June.
To handle the extra traffic during the six-month exhibition, üstra has acquired 144 new articulated LRVs to augment its existing fleet of 260 cars.
