SWEDEN: Green Cargo has placed a €51m order with Bombardier for 16 Traxx F140AC electric locomotives. To be delivered between February and July 2010, they will be used on freight trains to be operated under a 10-year contract with steel sheet and plate producer SSAB.
Green Cargo's SKr2·5bn transport contract with SSAB was announced on October 30, and covers the movement of more than 4 million tonnes of slab and rolled steel a year in 2010-19. There will be three return trains a day between Luleå and Borlänge, and two between Borlänge and Oxelösund. Green Cargo will also undertake shunting at the SSAB plants in Oxelösund and Borlänge.
'We want to have the best possible environmental performance of the SSAB transport system', said Fredrik Sand, Purchasing Manager at SSAB Tunnplåt. 'The Green Cargo investment in new electric locomotives reduces the energy consumption for our steel transport by more than 15%. Green Cargo is also replacing the engines of the diesel locomotives used for shunting at the SSAB plants to enable the carbon dioxide emissions to be lowered by around 20% and particulates emissions by around 60%.'
