WORK IS DUE to begin during the second quarter of 2007 on the 1 km Parc - Sud section of the TEC light metro in the Belgian city of Charleroi, expected to open at the end of 2010 to complete a long-planned city centre loop.
With one intermediate stop at Tirou, the extension running on the surface is expected to cost €24·5m to build and will include construction of a new bridge across the River Sambre.
Announcing that planning permission had been granted for the new link, André Antoine, Minister for Housing, Transport & Regional Development in the Wallonia regional government, said that work on the extension from Gilly to Soleilment should be completed in 2011, given that major works had been completed as far as Sart-Culpart.
A surface extension along the Chaussée de Bruxelles to Gosselies is also expected to open in 2011.
