WAGON leasing firm VTG Rail is promoting the Advanced Container Transport System within the UK rail freight market, highlighting that one person can transfer a loaded container between a rail wagon and lorry in around 60 sec.

ACTS comprises a turntable on a flat wagon, and a container appropriate to the load. Loading and unloading can take place on hard standing on either side of the wagon, the lorry simply lifting the container on or off using standard chain or hook lift equipment which is common on skip lorries.

Current traffic includes aluminium moving between northwest England and south Wales, but VTG says suitable containers are available to handle most types of freight. Interest has recently been expressed by the domestic waste and recycling industries.
