FOLLOWING a successful one-year trial, 150 suburban multiple-units in Hamburg are to be fitted with in-cab CCTV to allow drivers to monitor station platforms and close doors without the presence of platform staff. Supplied by Plettac, two FAC838 cameras and transmitters suitable for use in poor lighting conditions will be fitted to 50 stations by 2004.
Wireless infra-red transmission has been selected because it is immune to the high voltage interference which can be found in a railway environment. The short transmission range will limit the display to station areas, preventing drivers from being distracted. The time lag during transmission is less than 100ms, allowing drivers to monitor carriage doors in real time. Each cab will have two receivers and three 100Hz colour monitors.
