CUBIC Transportation Systems is to install smart card fare collection equipment on 14 Baltimore metro stations and 957 buses under a US$21·9m contract awarded by Maryland MTA on April 18. The equipment is compatible with that already in use on the Washington metro. A second contract will cover Baltimore’s light rail network and MARC commuter trains. This will permit the launch of a multi-state smart card, valid in Maryland, northern Virginia and the District of Columbia.
In a US$18m contract, Cubic is to install 160 touch-screen vending machines at stations on Vancouver’s second Skytrain line. Capable of issuing smart cards, the machines will accept Canadian and US currency, and credit and debit cards.
