Spanish Minister of Public Works Rafael Arias Salgado told Parliament last month that the state would fund construction of the planned 300 km/h AVE line between Madrid and Barcelona using funds generated by the privatisation of public companies. Tenders for lots between Madrid and Zaragoza could be called this year, with work starting in 1998.
