METRO line controllers may be able to respond more efficiently to operating disruptions using real-time decision support software which is being demonstrated by Cambridge Consultants Ltd.
The software can automatically balance any performance penalty payments applicable at the current time of day with crewing requirements, infrastructure limitations and the ease of returning to a normal service pattern. It gathers data from a range of inputs and sensors, suggesting recovery strategies in response to an incident. By automating the monitoring, the software leaves staff free to review the suggested actions, adapting or rejecting them as appropriate.
The system has been produced using CCL’s experience working with London Underground, and can be adapted to represent the structure, operating and performance regime for any metro or train operator. It is hoped that the demonstrator will lead to a full-scale implementation in the next few months.
