TRENITALIA Chief Executive Officer Roberto Renon and Passenger Director Massimo Ghenzer unveiled the first refurbished inter-city coaches at Roma Termini on June 16.The first rake of the carriages to be completed re-entered service between Napoli and Udine six days later.
The entire inter-city fleet is to be refurbished to modern standards. Trenitalia’s workshops expect to complete work on a total of 600 cars by 2004, and next autumn more dramatic work will begin on a further 900 for completion by 2006. The modernised coaches feature new seating, passenger information systems and improved disabled accessibility.
Bistro-style catering facilities will offer fast service and seasonal menus, and on-board cleaners were introduced to trains from June 22.
Renon said the refurbished carriages give ’higher standards of modernity and comfort’ and form ’one of the leading products of the company ... what we present today is a product of a very high quality at a very reasonable price.’
