INTERNATIONAL signalling and braking specialist Invensys Rail has launched a strategy to develop technology to meet the parameters and specifications of the European Train Control Systems project. Whilst the company is involved with project management of the ERTMS on-board Kernel test programme in Spain, it was not a founder member of the Eurosig manufacturers’ alliance developing the ETCS equipment.

Following the merger last year of the BTR group and Siebe, Invensys announced its new corporate name on April 16. The Invensys Rail business unit incorporates seven former BTR Rail companies, who will continue to trade under their established names: Westinghouse Signals Ltd (incorporating Signalling Control UK), Safetran Systems Inc (with its logistics subsidiary Burco Systems), Dimetronic Signals, Westinghouse Signals Australia, Westinghouse Brakes Ltd, and Westinghouse Brakes Australia.

Business Development Director David Gillan says Invensys Rail has the best mix of technical development and growth potential of all the businesses in the new group. Much of the ETCS-compatible equipment will be developed in house, but he did not rule out the possibility of acquisitions for business growth or bringing in additional expertise.
