From May 14 to 16, Tun Razak Hall 3 of Kuala Lumpur’s Putra World Trade Centre hosts Exporail (Asia) 97, organised by Interfama Brooks Exhibitions. Local supporters include operators KTMB, PUTRA and STAR, the Chartered Institute of Transport, Malaysia, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers and the Permanent Way Institution, Malaysia.
Over 130 exhibitors from 25 countries will be displaying a wide range of products and services for passenger and freight railways, from rolling stock and components through signalling and civil engineering to consultancy and project management.
Abtus will demonstrate its operator-propelled unit for measurement of track gauge, cant and distance, which provides audible and visual notification of defects. Resilient safety flooring from Altro Floors includes the Transfloor supplied for Bilbao metro cars. Dunlop Precision Rubber will display its Pyroflex fire-safe elastomers, suitable for sheathing electrical cables, which has also been used for platform door seals on the metros in Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Huber + Suhner will show its range of rolling stock cables for traction, control and databus applications. Lineside cables for power, signalling and data transmission will be on display, alongside assembled cables, halogen-free boots, transitions and tubes. For pedestrian level crossings in stations and maintenance areas, Kraiburg has developed the PedeSTRAIL system of semi-elastic rubber panels. STRAIL products have been installed in Denmark’s Storebaelt tunnel, and the Higashi-Oogijima container terminal in Kawasaki City, Japan. Hourglass and air springs for secondary suspensions, and chevron and Metacone primary suspension springs feature on the Metalastik stand.
Pandrol track fastenings include the Fastclip preassembled on a sleeper, and a vibration isolation assembly for concrete slab track and bridges. The PMA range of cable protection systems includes the nylon-based self-extinguishing Pmaflex pul, which recently achieved Underwriter Laboratories listing in the USA after tests including flammability, impact and tensile strength. Having supplied companies in Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia, Rotabroach is presenting its electric Midi rail drill for the first time. Available for 110 and 230V, the 19 kg Midi can cut fishplate and bonding holes in less than 60 s. Track components from Schwihag include IBAV slideplates with integrated height-adjustable rollers for lubrication-free points and hollow sleepers with integrated point rodding.
The Semco range of vacuum toilets includes the Semvac, Semlet and Tankvac systems; complete drop-in modules and Asian-style toilets are also available. The joint Siemens Integra Transportation Systems and Siemens Switzerland stand will be exhibiting the Iltis rail traffic management system and a trough sleeper point operating system with pawl point lock. Location of point-operating machinery within the sleeper is intended to make tamping as simple as with plain track. Stanley Hydraulic Tools of Milwaukee will be showing its range of lightweight track tools, including rail drills, tampers and spike drivers.
Maintenance and monitoring units will be demonstrated by Surrey Materials Inspection Systems, which is currently seeking agents for the Asian market. SMIS has developed ultrasonic axle testing equipment and infrastructure monitoring systems for OHE inspection and structure gauging. Tarmac Precast Concrete will be showing examples from its range of sleepers, crossing bearers and other rail support systems, and offering support services for establishing local manufacturing plants.
Thorn Transit Systems International will display automatic fare collection equipment with integrated contactless smart card technology, including ticket vending machines and high-throughput entry/exit gates. TTSI is incorporating smart card capability into its equipment for Hong Kong MTR’s Airport Railway. The TKL Rail track products range includes microalloyed steel for points and crossings supplied by BWG of Germany.
ANI Railway Transportation Group is one of 22 Australian suppliers exhibiting on the Australian Railway Industry Corp stand. ANI has won a A$34·2m contract to design and supply components for 500 container wagons for KTM Berhad, to be assembled locally under the supervision of Bradken Malaysia. Energy Controls Pty Ltd is to supply inverters for cab amenities in the 120 Goninan-GE Dash-9 diesel locos for National Rail Corp. Also present will be Queensland Rail Consulting Services with a range of expertise including strategic planning, heavy haul operations, training and development. TMG International is to demonstrate its Mtrain operations simulation package and the Metromiser which advises on energy-efficient driving and facilitates on-time running. Primary springs, bearing pads and resilient wheel isolators will feature on the Vulcanite Rubber Products display. o

Thomas Telford Conferences is presenting two seminars on ’Vehicle & Track Performance’, on May 14-16 at the Putra World Trade Centre in conjunction with Exporail. ’Cutting the Costs of Track Maintenance’ looks at infrastructure design, maintenance equipment, planning aids and contractual arrangements. ’Improving Vehicle Performance’ discusses bogie design, passenger comfort, better freight vehicle performance and improving loco haulage capability.

On May 14-15, Independent Technical Conferences is organising an international conference on ’Mass Transit Management’ at the Putra World Trade Centre.
Six sessions will discuss planning and design, human behaviour, systems and equipment, emerging technologies, operational systems and maintenance. A technical visit to the STAR light rail line has been arranged for the afternnon of May 15.
