SWEDISH regional operator Svenska Tågkompaniet has awarded Duroc Rail a contract to maintain the wheels and wheelsets of its rolling stock fleet, including application of the Duroc treatment process to extend the life of contact surfaces. This uses a high-power laser to heat the wheel tread, followed by application of a super alloy. The process can also be used to harden rail in locations subject to heavy wear, such as on curves.
Tågkompaniet will be paying a km-based fee for the service reflecting vehicle usage. Duroc Rail has signed a letter of intent with a leading wheel manufacturer, and treated wheelsets are undergoing trials in Germany and Great Britain, where the company is working with consultancy The Engineering Link.
