SAB WABCO will be presenting its ’drive-through’ contactless wheel profile measuring system, which uses lasers to acquire data as vehicles pass at 25 km/h.
Pairs of sensors are mounted on each side of the rails, and remain in sleep mode until activated by an approaching vehicle. Data is collected from both wheels of a set, and transferred to a database. The profile is compared with data for a new wheel, and any deviations or exceeded tolerances are flagged up, allowing more accurate maintenance planning and statistical analysis of tyre wear.
The sensors can be installed within a workshop, or are available with a pneumatically-controlled protective cover and built-in heater for outdoor use. Options include support for 40 km/h running or trains arriving from either direction.
