INDIAN Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani laid a foundation stone for Delhi Metro Line 3 at a ceremony on June 3. The 22·8 km third line forms part of Phase 1 of the city’s metro network, and will link Barakhamba with Dwarka, serving 22 stations. The first section between Barakhamba Road and Kirti Nagar is due to open in June 2005, and the line will be completed in September 2005.
Line 3 will be elevated through west and southwest Delhi, except for a 1·1 km two-station tunnel between Barakhamba and Panchkuian Road. A 6·5 km extension at Dwarka is planned, serving another six stations.
The Japanese government is providing substantial funding for the Delhi Metro project, and Japan’s Ambassador to India Akira Hayashi attended the ceremony.
