SINGAPORE’S Land Transport Authority has awarded a €170m contract to a consortium of Alstom and ST Elec for mechanical and electrical work on the second phase of the medium-capacity Marina automated metro line.
An initial 5·6 km section of the Marina line is now under construction between Dhoby Ghaut and Stadium Boulevard, at a cost of S$1bn. The S$1·4bn Phase 2 approved by Transport Minister Yeo Cheow Tong in May will see the line extended by 5 km from Stadium Boulevard to Paya Lebar, adding a further five stations. This section is due to be finished by 2006. Further extensions are envisaged to create a 36 km orbital route around the city centre which would not be completed until after 2010.
Alstom and ST Elec are to supply seven more three-car Metropolis trainsets for Phase 2, together with signalling and train control equipment from the Axonis range. Alstom will also be responsible for overall project management. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2004.
