ALSTOM has outsourced to Exel management of the supply chain for the delivery of around 1000 types of component worth £50m required for 87 cars Alstom is to build for London Underground’s Jubilee Line.
The components include wheelsets, air-conditioning and control systems, which will be brought from the suppliers to Exel’s logistics centre in Worcester where they will be assembled into kits for just-in-time delivery to Alstom’s assembly plant in Barcelona.
Network Rail has appointed Exel to handle materials supply chain management in its Manchester Contract Area, involving between £4m and £5m of materials turnover and eight stocking locations. Exel now handles almost 40% of Network Rail’s maintenance materials supply.
