DISTRIBUTED to subscribers with this issue is the 2004 edition of our annual supplement on urban rail developments, Metro Report. Senior executives from 13 cities worldwide report on current and future investment plans, and other articles include a detailed review of the low-floor tram and light rail market. An analysis of the costs of light rail projects should prove useful to city transport planners contemplating new lines.
This year’s Metro Report also carries our two-yearly world survey of metro and light rail projects under construction. Compiled by Industry Editor Andrew Grantham, the survey finds that over 2000 km of urban railway were under construction as at March 31 2004. Projects range from Barcelona metro’s 41·4 km Line 9 to a 1·1 km light rail extension in Sacramento. A spreadsheet giving further details of urban rail projects at the feasibility and planning stage is available to purchase, and readers are invited to contact railway.gazette@rbi.co.uk for details.
