WORK began last month on two new stations in Modi’in, which will be served by a line branching at Daniel Junction from Israel Railways’ planned fast line from Ben-Gurion Airport to Jerusalem.

The US$26m contract for Modi’in Central was awarded to Shafir Engineering. The four-platform station will be built underground using cut-and-cover techniques, with a business centre above the 1000m2 site. Construction is expected to take 18 months, and work is underway on an adjacent bus interchange.

Engineering firm Ken Hator has been awarded a US$6m contract for a suburban station 3 km from Central, with park and ride facilities for 1000 cars. Work is expected to take 12 months. The company is also responsible for rebuilding Jerusalem’s Malha terminus as part of the upgrading of the conventional line to the city.
