SWISS Federal Railways is replacing paper documentation and hand-written notes issued to drivers with 4000 Psion Teklogix netBook portable computers. SBB drivers were issued with the netBooks in mid-December, replacing an estimated 40 tonnes of paper.
Supplied by Excom, the netBooks use Locomotive Electronic Assistant software custom-designed for railway use by Comrex AG. All instructions, duty rosters and route data are displayed on the computers, with a central server providing notification of changes and updates before a driver’s journey begins.
The netBooks are automatically powered up when they are opened. The 640 x 480 pixel VGA touch-screen provides a user-friendly interface, and a full keyboard allows staff to enter information about routes for storage and later retrieval.
